Heliospheric pickup ions in the solar wind from 5-10 AU
Science Objective:
Description of Data Being Used:
Primarily IMS data. Ultimately IBS and ELS may be used in a
supporting way.
Purpose:
Look for singly ionized pick-up ions from
protons (with up to twice the SW speed) through
heavy ions. Analyze observations in terms of
inner source pickup ions and heliospheric
pickup ions entering the heliosphere as neutrals
from the local interstellar medium.
IMS ion data from the Rhea encounters. This study assumes
the actuator will be in a fixed orientation during the Rhea
wake crossing, the the fan perpendicular to B.
Purpose:
Determine how (non) gyrotropic the ions in Rhea's
wake are (due to collisions with Rhea and
sputtering from Rhea's surface) and compare the
results to model calculations (Crary and Hansen,
2002, MOP meeting)
