CAPS Team Meeting #19
Dear Colleagues,
As Dave Young indicated, I have the pleasure of hosting the next CAPS
team meeting at Rice on Thursday-Friday October 28-29, 1999. The
meeting will be on the second floor of the Faculty Club on the Rice
campus, with group seating for lunch in the first-floor dining room. We
may also ask the faculty club to provide the group dinner for Thursday
evening. A modest conference fee (TBD) will be collected to cover
meals, coffee breaks, room charge, etc.
The recommended hotel is the Crowne Plaza, located at 6701 So. Main
St., about 1.3 km from the faculty club. They are holding a block of
(30) rooms until 6 Oct. at a guaranteed rate of $85/night (single or
double). The normal Rice rate is $89/night and the normal off-the-
street rate is $140/night. To reserve your room, call 713-797-1110
or fax 713-797-1034 and mention the "Cassini Team" to get the group
rate. If you have any problems, don't hesitate to call me (713-527-
4651) or Mrs. Umbelina Cantu (dept. administrator for Space Physics
and Astronomy) at 713-527-4939. (If you call me, I will immediately
take the problem to Umbe, so you might as well call her first.)
Houston Intercontinental Airport (aka "George Bush Intercontinental
Airport") is located about 30 km north of the Rice campus and the
hotel. The regional Houston Hobby Airport is located about 12 km
southeast of Rice. Drive time in non-rush-hour traffic is ~ 45 min and
25 min respectively. Thus, Hobby is more convenient, but is available
only for certain domestic routes. Shuttle busses run every 1/2 hour
from each airport to the Crowne Plaza hotel.
More information will be provided in a future email. This should be
enough to get you started. Don't forget, hotel reservations by 6
October to get the lower rate. And please let me know as soon as you
have decided to attend, so that I can keep an accurate head count.
This email is going only to the lead contact at each co-I institution.
Please forward it immediately to other team members at your
institution.
I look forward to hosting you. The weather in Houston is pleasant that
time of year, cool by our standards but balmy by most standards.
