Transportation:
There are several flights per day by Aegean airlines and Olympic airlines into Chios.

There are ferries every day; some depart from Piraeus ~6pm and arrive at ~11:30pm. Others depart later and arrive ~5am with sleeper cabins.

Rental cars are readily available, but most are stick shift.

There is a ferry boat to Turkey (~50min), for possible sightseeing after the meeting.

Sight Seeing Information:

All,
In further planning for subject meeting, we thought that some post-meeting sightseeing may appeal to some of the participants. Two possibilities are as follows:
  1. On Friday, June 1 a tour of the island on a pullman (tour bus) with a guide, with a stop at some remote beach for lunch, etc. This will probably take most of the day-there is plenty to see- check Chios related websites.
  2. An excursion could be arranged across from Chios to Turkey for Saturday-Sunday. There are daily ferry boats going to Chesme- takes about 50 minutes. From there a tour bus with a guide could be arranged to take the group to Izmir (lots of inexpensive shopping opportunities), ancient Ephesos , Pergamon, Alikarnassos, possibly Sardis and Troy. We did this some 10 years ago with the Ulysses HI-SCALE team and it was very much enjoyed by everybody. You can again check out the various websites and see if you are interested. It would be possible to return to Chios on Sunday afternoon and still catch flights to Athens that evening. My estimate of the cost is $200-300 per person including transportation, meals and the hotel, based on extrapolation from 10 years ago. We could ask a local travel agent to make all the arrangements (same one who did it last time).
The action here is to let me know how many of you are interested in either (1), (2) or both, including the number of persons, so we may proceed with arrangements and you can make your travel reservations accordingly. Please copy Nick Sergis (nsergis@phys.uoa.gr) in your response who is helping with the arrangements (in addition to working on Saturn.s ring current). Your early response would be appreciated, but should be no later than the end of February.
Regards,
Tom

Further information: The cost of the trip to Turkey is closer to $150 rather than the higher cost.

The hotel in Chios has specified that they will charge the same rate over the weekend.
